Teen Week - Planning for Your Future

Last week, we posted a blog on fun activities for students during this time of quarantine.  As we looked over the list, we noticed that it was mostly focused on elementary and middle school students. Our high school students are also struggling to find ways to fill their time and remain socially connected to their peers.  For seniors, this time has been particularly difficult because they are missing out on many of the events they have looked forward to since kindergarten! To support our teenage students, our blog will be devoting an entire week to them!  Each day, we will have a list of activities to keep them engaged, active, and entertained. Today we are sharing ways they can begin preparing for college and planning for their future. Let us know if you think of more!  Show us your activities by tweeting to us @schoolpsychws. Use #wspsychs and #wsfcslearnon.  We would love to add your ideas to this list!

College Prep

Is your teen planning to take the SAT next year? Now is a great time to start practicing and learning test-taking strategies. Khan Academy has free resources to help. Visit Khan Academy SAT Prep

ACT.org has information to help your student prepare to take the ACT.  Although some of their test preparation materials have a fee, they also offer several free resources including live and recorded webinars, study guides, and practice tests. Visit ACT Prep and scroll down to the bottom of the page.

The College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) has so many resources for helping students plan for college. It is possible your child already has an account.  If not, now is the perfect time for them to create one. Students are able to explore colleges and learn about programs and majors. They can also learn how to apply for college, financial aid, grants, and scholarships.

CollegeBoard also has great resources to help with college searches. Your student can explore colleges, majors, and careers and even compare colleges. To learn more, visit Big Future

Was your teen excited about doing college tours over spring break?  Although those have been canceled for the foreseeable future, many schools are offering virtual tours. Learn more from one of our recent blogs Virtual College and University Campus Tours

We mentioned that Coursera is offering free online courses and they have one specifically on applying to college.

Planning for the Future

Does your teen struggle to make and set goals for themselves?  Research has shown that we increase our chances of success when we write down goals and share them with others. Even as an adult, goal setting can be difficult, so imagine how challenging it is for teens. This blog from Teen Smart Goals simplifies this process by teaching a 3-step process for helping teens with goal setting. This period of online learning might be the perfect time to help them learn this important life skill.

Another great resource from CFNC is the CFNC High School Planning Timeline. This page gives students all the steps they need to follow at each grade level so they are on-track for their future. Not only do they provide steps for college preparation, but steps for alternate pathways after high school are also included.

CFNC also provides resources for students to explore who they are and how their interests and skills match with careers. For no cost at all, students can take interest assessments, a basic skills survey, a career cluster survey, and a transferable skills checklist. Visit CFNC Learn About Yourself

My Next Move is another site to help students explore their interests and careers.  They have information on over 900 career options. Users can take an interest inventory that suggests careers that match your interests and training.
