May is Mental Health Awareness Month

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year and only half of them receive treatment. NAMI is dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. They have more than 700 NAMI State Organizations and Affiliates who work to raise awareness and provide support and education to those in need. You can visit their website to find your local NAMI.

NAMI also actively participates in Mental Health Awareness Month to eradicate stigma, extend support, foster public education, and advocate for policies that prioritize the well-being of individuals and families affected by mental illness. Join their Take the Moment campaign to promote open dialogues, and cultivate empathy and understanding. They have provided a toolkit with more information on the campaign including how to spread awareness, social media content, graphics to share, and facts.

NAMI provides a Teen & Young Adult HelpLine where you can connect with a peer who understands  your challenges and can offer guidance and support to help you navigate tough situations. The HelpLine operates Monday through Friday from 10 A.M to 10 P.M. ET. You can reach out by calling 1.800.950.6264 or texting "HelpLine" to 62640.

This services is not a hotline, crisis line, or suicide prevention line. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please contact 988 through chat, call, or text for immediate assistance.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has also put together a toolkit with social media content, best practices for conversations about mental health, and promotional materials for awareness. Weekly themes and key messages are also included.

Show your support for mental health awareness by wearing green all month long! Green is the official color for mental health awareness, symbolizing renewal, hope, and vitality. By wearing green, you are showing your support for mental health and advocating for its importance. Let's raise awareness and support mental health initiatives throughout the month!

Mental Health America also has a fantastic outreach toolkit for its “Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World” campaign, including social media materials, posters, fact sheets, and many linked resources.

Here are 5 things you can do for your #mentalhealth this week:
